5k Run for Families 2010

5K Run for Families Raises $4,800 for Blessing Hands and Habitat for Humanity.

We had a great time at the run. The sun came out just in time.  We really want to thank all our volunteers, sponsors, and runners who enjoyed the day and helped each other. We invite you all back next year.

What a great community Morehead, Kentucky  is. Everyone helped, including the city and county police. The Rowan County Road Department made special 5K Run signs for each end of our course.  Volunteers gave out water, cleared the course, and timed the runners.  Special thanks goes to Kroger Center whose management rushed the resurfacing of their parking lot to avoid conflicts with our run.

Nine visiting scholars from China spent the morning monitoring prize tables, manning the turn around of the course, taking pictures, and helping out where needed. They had never been to an auction or seen an American run. It is not something they will soon forget.

Bluebank Church of God loaned us their van and driver, David Alexander, for the morning. Chris Kennedy at Commercial Signs gave us a 10 foot banner we can use again.  The Salon and Day Spa  and Cici's Pizza Buffet welcomed us to the space in front of their store, and Cici's gave us a percentage of their lunch receipts. Jeff Fannin's Good Shepherd Printing gave us 2,000 brochures that were designed by MSU student Karla Spencer.

Ezra Dike from Habitat is a man of integrity concerned for his community. Other  great committee members were Bob Grueninger, Jamie Sparks, Doris Wells, Kevin Sparks, Jan Lewis, and Ryan Shaw.

Jeannette Brigantino,  who owns Jeannette's Catering, recruited her friends to help with the refreshments.  Doris Wells solicited  the most donors as an individual while Kappa Delta Pi, a MSU Education honor society, raised $340 in donations as a team. Their advisor  Kimberlee Sharp recruited 15 members.

Most of all we thank our sponsors who made it all possible. They are listed at the bottom of the newsletter.

MSU Habitat Student Chapter Begins Anew

On the evening of Sept 9th and 10th a once dormant force for good re-awakened to build upon a legacy of good deeds. That re-awakened and invigorated force is none other the Morehead State University Student Chapter for Habitat for Humanity. In the past the club has contributed many volunteer hours in the construction of Habitat homes, as well as in fund-raising projects. Such as by building a utility shed on campus and raffling it off—all proceeds went towards building habitat homes. Campus Habitat Chapters do not only benefit the mission of Habitat for Humanity of course, students gain skills and knowledge useful for a lifetime and more importantly an appreciation for the value of service and volunteerism and the very real effect that kindness and compassion has upon a community. This lesson does not come easily and can only come through  experience, an experience which will guide future decisions for a lifetime. Morehead Habitat applauds the rebirth of the MSU Club and looks forward to working with them for years to come.
